The women's fashion industry has been a hard one to revolutionize especially as a one-woman team but recently more and more brands have been adding pockets to clothing.
Every woman may think that this is a huge step forward and that finally we can walk this world being fashionably functional....until you try to use those pockets.
Many times the pockets are fake, and if they're not fake they're sewed shut to prevent theft. Once you open the pocket up (if it is indeed a real pocket), it's either comically small or doesn't actually support anything you place in them.
Fast fashion companies have figured out how to add this gimmick in order to increase sales AND WE FELL FOR IT! It's hard to fight large corporations when we demand pockets and they provide.....well I suppose they're "pockets".
When I started making skirts with pockets, my very first few skirts either had no pockets or hilariously small pockets. When I came up with the pattern that is currently used on my skirts, I made sure at the VERY least that my modern day giant cell phone could fit without falling out. Eventually that transformed into wanting to be able to carry the most important essentials: phone, wallet, AND keys.
From there, it wasn't JUST about being able to carry your personal items, it was about carrying your items discreetly without ruining the shape and structure of the skirt. Since my skirts' pockets are sewn in at the side seams, they allow quite a bit of weight to be added without being noticeable.
Then came the idea of ZIPPERED POCKETS. This was technically an idea taken from men's sweatpants but what a genius idea! The ability to go about WITHOUT A PURSE (if I randomly die just know that I am happy and it was definitely the purse industry that took me out) and not have to worry about losing any important items has been so impactful. After this discovery, I made it a standard that all of my skirts (unless requested otherwise) will have one regular pocket for ease of access and a zippered pocket for added security.
In 2023, I did an experiment where I actually spent money to buy a cheap dress with pockets from a well known mall store, here's how that went:
